Description
4L80E Transmission – The much bigger brother of the Turbo 400 Transmission offers the 0.75:1 overdrive ratio provides a significant reduction in cruising RPM which will help contribute to a dramatic increase in efficiency. The 4L80E can also use a lock-up torque converter which makes you able to have a higher stall speed and then Lock up the converter to maximize the efficiency.
The lock-up function is applied via an internal clutch which virtually eliminates all heat build-up in the converter at cruising speeds while providing even more efficiency in addition to the efficiency increases already provided by overdrive. Big camshaft engines must be careful not to drop the engine RPM too low as the car will hunt on the Locked up converter and this is why some choose not to run the Lock Up as the Overdrive already makes such a huge difference.
