A Park Pawl is a small, mechanical component that is located within the transmission system of an automatic vehicle. It consists of a metal pawl or locking pin that engages with the output gear to lock the vehicle in ‘Park’ mode when the gear selector is switched to Park. The Park Pawl helps ensure that vehicles remain stationary and prevent rollback on sloping driveways or hills. When the transmission is shifted into ‘Park’ mode, spring loaded pressure is applied to the Park Pawl, which forces it into a slot in one of the output gears to lock it in place. This prevents any further movement from occurring until the shift selector is moved back out of ‘Park’ mode again.
